What happens when a traveler encounters the Himba tribe in Namibia? Earlier this year, Sussan Mourad travelled with the World Nomads film crew to explore Namibia. The highlight of the trip was the day spent visiting a nomadic Himba tribe deep in the heart of Namibia. While apprehensive at first, Sussan managed to connect with the women of the tribe despite language and cultural barriers. After speaking extensively about the Himba women's unique beauty regime of applying ochre and fat to their skin, Sussan asks if she too can try out the treatment. Watch as Sussan is transformed from traveller to tribal woman -- and see how the women of the tribe react to her new look. *Note: Being invited into a Himba village and being dressed like a Himba woman is not a common occurrence in Nami...

Given the Xmas holiday period we booked car plus some accommodation from Europe. With a couple of more days, we recommend to reach Opuwo to see the Himba people. With further 3/4 days, you can add the Namibian Kahalari and the south. DAY 1 Arrival in Windhoek. Pick up of the car, first walk in the city. Dinner at Joe Beerhouse DAY 2 From Windhoek to Sesriem. Ca 5 hours of beautiful driving getting the first experience with Namibian gravel roads. Most road in Namibia are gravel but are relatively large and well maintained. Afternoon in Sesriem spent visiting the canyon and climbing the Elim dune. DAY 3 Wake up at 5.30am to enter the park as it opens (6.10am). Drive the 45km to get to the Dune 45 and first breathtaking climb of the dune. Then straight to Deadvlei and Sussusvlei until around 1pm. As it is summer (up to 45C), we spent the central hours of the day sleeping near the sleeping pool of the lodge. Then short tour and beer to watch the sunset from the savannah DAY 4 Another early wake up and we are on the way to Swakopmund. First stop is at Solitaire, to taste the apple pie which is recommended in every guidebook. Then stop at the Tropic of Capricorn. The first part of the drive is beautiful with savanna landscape. After you cross the Kuiseb pass you enter a total new landscape as you are entering the Skeleton Coast. A couple of hours of drive in the desolation, and we reach first Walvis Bay, and then Swakopmund where we spend the afternoon exploring the German soul of this city. DAY 5 The day was spend in an excursion. In the morning we went by boat in the Walvis bay, watching seals, birds, shipwrecks ... In the afternoon, we took the 4x4 excursion to Sandwitch Harbour, a secluded bay very difficult to reach unless you are an experienced off-road driver with the right car. The place is amazing and the top moment was the lunch on the beach, eating oysters, in a beautiful and unspoiled oasis completely untouched by civilisation DAY 6 Another day on the road (6 hours with stops). From Swakop, we headed north along the Skeleton Coast stopping at the Leila shipwreck and Cape Cross, a colony of thousands of fur seals. From there we drove to the Damaraland which we reached in the early afternoon, on time for a visit to the Twyfelfontein archaeological site (rock engravings and paintings dated between 2,000 and 6,000 years ago). A stop to the Herero women along the roads is a good spot to get some nice souvenirs. DAY 7 On the move again, direction Etosha. But before we spent an hour at the petrified forest and getting some fuel and lunch in Khorixas. From there, the road to Etosha is paved again. We arrived in Etosha at the Okaukejo Lodge. A couple of hour to rest and we are in the bush again with the car spotting the first animals (giraffe, zebra, impala) DAY 8 Whole day spent in the car, slowly wandering around the Etosha park. Despite the raining season (the animals are spread in the bush and the vegetation is more dense) we spotted all the key animals with the exception of the felines (esp. the lion was missing). DAY 9 Return to Windhoek. A nice long way, with a couple of nice and clean villages to stop by to refuel and buy some food and souvenirs. Evening passed enjoying a beer in the great outdoor garden at Joe Beerhouse. DAY 10 Visit of Windhoek. A small city, not much to see but good for spending a few hours walking around. Flight in late afternoon. www.guglielmobiason.net

WARNING: The following visuals may upset sensitive viewers Simon Sonnekus, Netwerk24 A Namibian woman is facing charges of child abuse, assault and attempted murder after she recklessly threw a baby she was caring for into a cot. Annemarie Theron, reservations and marketing manager at a lodge in Namibia, laid a charge at the Outjo police station in Namibia, after capturing video footage of her nine-month old daughter Laila being manhandled by her nanny. “It was very emotional watching it. I refused to sleep, eat or drink for a couple of days afterward. It’s difficult to imagine how long this has been going on for. I can see Laila is so, so broken after everything,” Theron said. Theron said she noticed bruises on Laila’s neck and shoulders and suspected all was not well. “After that I sat at work, thinking about my daughter the entire day. That’s when I decided to install cameras, so that I could see what was happening when I’m not at home.” She was shocked after watching the footage, and immediately laid a charge at the police station. “It was quite a process, as I had to confirm with a mediator what it would mean if I made the recordings without her (the nanny’s) knowledge. The police were initially hesitant about the charges, but wanted to arrest the woman immediately after seeing the footage.” According to Theron, the woman appeared in court on Monday. The state added the charge of attempted murder. A police spokesperson confirmed Namibian police are aware of the incident, but would not speak to foreign media. Deputy commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, Namibia’s head police spokesperson, wasn’t available for comment. “I don’t want her near my child ever again, or to pose a threat to other children. What happened was horrible to witness. I realised Laila has nightmares,” said Theron. Laila is currently attending a kindergarten during the day. She doesn’t believe all nannies are bad and says she may consider employing a nanny in the future. Theron says support flooded in after she posted the video footage to social media. “It was comforting to see how many people supported us. Thanks to everyone, family, friends, and strangers, it means a great deal.

The Kalahari Desert dominates most parts of eastern and south-eastern Namibia. Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch is an oasis in midst of the imposing parallel dunes, conveying an atmosphere of freedom, pristine nature, warmth and safety. As our logo suggests we attach great value to conservation and education. This is why we decided "Pepper" to be our four-legged ambassador. Pepper is a female cheetah (Acinonys jubatus). Although a wild animal, the fascinating canine creature is not averse to contact with humans -- as long as the latter stick to certain rules important when dealing with wild animals. The start of our fantastic 6 400 km and three week Namibia-Botswana road trip. Our trusty Nissan Double Cab Camping Equipped 4x4 took us from Windhoek to the Bagatelle ranch on the edge of the Southern Kalahari. The roads we took were B1 - C20 - D1268, with a total of 270 km and 4 hours. We stopped at the gas station and supermarket in Rehoboth 90 km south of Windhoek. Beautiful sceneries and great driving experience. Trip reservations by Wild Dog Safaris (http://www.wilddog-safaris.com). Visit Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch (http://bagatelle-kalahari-gameranch.com). Twenty-nine-year-old Zuma Katjiuonga lives two lives. In Namibia's capital Windhoek, he works as a lighting technician for a regional TV broadcaster. He leads a modern life and has been in a relationship for two years. But he also belongs to the nomadic Himba tribe and feels bound to its traditions. It's estimated that around 7,000 Himba live in Namibia and Angola today. Most of Africa's nomadic tribes have long since settled down. Today there are just eight large nomadic tribes on the continent, like the Massai. But they, too, have to balance a life between the modern world and traditional customs. For more go to http://www.dw.de/program/global-3000/s-11487-9798
